In 1988, Hughes' real estate development company, Summa Corporation (now Howard Hughes Corporation), announced the Summerlin Master Planned Community project, named after Hughes' grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin. Construction started soon after, with the first residential village, park, and school opening in 1990.
